Footnotes
Syria is derived from צרה (tsarah) #6869. Hebrew, צרה refers to trouble, distress, adversity, or affliction. It describes situations of adversity or hardship, whether physical, emotional, or spiritual. Commonly used in the Hebrew Bible to express the challenges faced by individuals or communities, hence the "many holding many-colored blows/plagues" in Psalm 34:19: "Many are the adversities (צרוֹת) of the just..."
The aorist middle infinitive ἀπογράψασθαι derives from ἀπογράφω, whose primary Classical meaning is “to write off,” “to copy,” or “to transcribe.”
In the middle voice, it means “to have a copy made (for oneself).” See LSJ, s.v. ἀπογράφω,
I. In extended administrative usage (II), it came to mean “to register,” “to enroll,” or “to declare property,” especially in bureaucratic and census contexts.
In Attic legal language (III), it also means “to indict” or “to enter a person’s name in a formal accusation,” with the middle and passive forms indicating participation in or subjection to legal proceedings.
This use of ἀπογράφω as a legal term meaning “to indict” or “to register a formal accusation” is firmly attested in Classical Athenian law, and thus predates the time of the New Testament by several centuries.
The Greek κατάλυμα is directly derived from the verb καταλύω. Literally, it means “at the place where one breaks down/unpacks/dissolves” (from the verb καταλύω—"to abolish," "dissolve," "render vain," or "demolish"). In its original sense, it referred to a spot where a traveler would unyoke his or her carriage or set down their baggage—a stopping place or resting spot. Over time, this idea evolved into the meaning of an inn, lodging, or residence. See its use in Mark 14:14 as a guest room/dining place "where we may eat."
Cf. Baillys κατάλυμα
ἐς μισγάγκειαν συμβάλλετον ὄβριμον ὕδωρ (Iliad 4.453)
ῥοὰς Σιμόεις συμβάλλετον ἠδὲ Σκάμανδρος (Iliad 5.774)
Used by Homer to describe rivers merging or coming together, emphasizing their flowing into one another.
The verb συλλαμβάνω, primarily means "to seize, gather, arrest, apprehend, or rally troops."
-
To gather or collect together
-
To assemble people or things into a group, to collect forces or fragments of an army (e.g. Hdt. 5.46).
-
To sum up or encapsulate (e.g. Hdt. 3.82; Plat. Men. 76a).
-
-
To grasp or seize
-
To take hold of physically, to grip, or to compress (e.g. Plat. Phaed. 118c; Soph. Aj. 310).
-
To arrest or capture a person (e.g. Soph. Ph. 979, 1003).
-
-
To conceive (biological sense)
-
To become pregnant, either of a woman or an animal (e.g. Arist. H.A. 7.1).
-
-
To help or assist
-
To come to someone’s aid, to help them in a task or with a burden (e.g. Hdt. 6.125; Plat. Leg. 905c).
-
However, the more standard Greek term for "to conceive" was κύω, with its derivatives κύησις (pregnancy/conception) and κυοφορέω (to be pregnant), but not used in the NT.
The Greek διανοίγω (to open thoroughly/through) carries the sense of opening across or through,
"1. Transitive: to open, especially to open by separating parts of the body, as in τὸ στόμα (the mouth), Hippocrates, Mul. 2.127."
(cf. LSJ, DGE, Bailly)
It implies the separation of two sides to create a passage or gap. This is reflected in its use in contexts like opening doors, the mouth, or eyes, as well as in more figurative uses, such as revealing or explaining knowledge. The idea centers around the concept of parting or separating something to allow access or understanding, whether physically (e.g., opening a door) or intellectually (e.g., revealing hidden meaning).
This concept aligns with the Hebrew noun פטר (Strong's #6363), which refers to that which separates or first opens, and its verb root פטר (Strong's #6362)meaning to cleave or burst through. The Hebrew פתר is often used in the construct form פתר רחם "opening up the womb" or in apposition with בכור (firstborn), signifying the separation that occurs with the birth of the firstborn, the firstborn of both man or beast, emphasizing the "opening" of the womb as a literal and symbolic separation. See
- Ezekiel 20:26
- Exodus 13:12, 15
- Exodus 34:19
- Numbers 18:15
Here also the Greek μήτρα "matrix, womb, origin, source" is used as opposed to "the Belly, Stomach"
The Greek noun περιστέρα (peristéra), meaning "dove" or "pigeon." The etymology of περιστέρα likely derives from the verb περιστέρω (peristérō), meaning "sound round about." The word is composed of περί (peri), meaning "around," and στερέω/στερεός (stéreo), meaning "to make firm" or "to support." Thus, the etymological sense can be understood as "a surrounding support" or "stereo sound" possibly reflecting the bird’s circular or supportive flight patterns in flocks.
The ῥομφαία rhomphaia was originally a "spear" and later a long, curved "sword."
Historical accounts and linguistic sources show that it originally functioned as polearm. Rich’s Dictionary of Antiquities describes it as having a wooden shaft of the same dimensions as the iron head, similar to the Roman pilum (javelin).
Hesychius lists ῥομφαία as μάχαιρα, ξίφος, ἤ ἀκόντιον μακρόν, indicating it could be a sword, long blade, or even a javelin-like weapon. Additionally, the Dacian falx, a similar weapon, had long-handled variants used with two hands, further supporting the idea that some ῥομφαίαι were polearm-like.
Roman military adaptations against Thracian and Dacian warriors—such as reinforcing helmets—suggest that these weapons had enough length and impact force to be effective in breaking shields and armor, a characteristic of polearms and long two-handed weapons.
The Greek is ζάω to live, be alive, as in the Zoe-Life. This is not the word "to live with" or "to dwell" as one might be led to think since it is followed by the preposition "in company with". A small nuance with big implications, easily overlooked.
