This verse uses the preposition ἐπὶ twice. The first time it is followed by a noun in the genitive, the second instance is followed by a plural noun in the accusative.
The preposition ἐπὶ with the accusative carries a sense of motion or direction toward or against something, rather than a static position. Therefore ἐπὶ τὰς κεφαλὰς could be understood as "against the heads" rather than merely "on" or "upon the heads."
The meaning of ἐπὶ changes depending on the case it governs: With the accusative (as in ἐπὶ τὰς κεφαλὰς), it often implies motion toward, onto, or even against something. With the genitive, it usually indicates position or location (e.g., "on top of" or "on/upon"). With the dative, it often conveys rest or position at a place. So, in the accusative case, ἐπὶ τὰς κεφαλὰς could be interpreted as "against the heads" in a context of action or hostility. For example, it might be used in warfare, judgment, or punishment settings, where something is directed toward or against someone's head.
The phrases are doubled.
εἴ τις εἰς αἰχμαλωσίαν, εἰς αἰχμαλωσίαν ὑπάγει
τις ἐν μαχαίρᾳ ἀποκτενεῖ, αὐτὸν ἐν μαχαίρᾳ ἀποκτανθῆναι
And that was the point. The doubling of texts throughout the Hebrew and also Greek, in this manner, is obviously unconventional language, and does not resemble how any one speaks or communicates (unless they stutter). But in a timeless two-sided realm of duplicate reflections, unconventional language has to be used. In these cases, scholars found it better to change or alter texts rather than leave them as is.
The best attested reading:
- "If anyone into captivity, into captivity he goes; if anyone to be killed by the sword, he must be killed by the sword."
- This reading aligns closely with passages from Jeremiah 15:2 and Jeremiah 43:11, which emphasize the inevitability of divine judgment and preordained fates.
- The verb is not explicitly stated in the Greek text for the first clause, leaving it implied and adding to the interpretative challenge.
Cf. Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges, Commentary on Revelation 13:10
The Greek verb δῶσιν is in the third person plural form of the aorist active subjunctive of δίδωμι (they might give). Cf. Perseus Morphology on δῶσιν.
It is a known and obvious word in the Greek manuscripts. But how was it translated?
- "to receive" NIV
- "to be given" NLT
- "causes to be marked" ESV
- "to receive" Berean Standard Bible
- "that it should give" Berean Literal Bible
- "to receive" KJV
- "to be given" NASB
- "that there be given" ASV
- "to obtain" NET Bible
- "it may give" Literal Standard Version
- "it may give" Young's Literal Translation
- "he should give" Julia Smith's Literal Translation
- "to receave" Tyndale Bible of 1526
We only found one little known translation that gave the true rendering:
"And he causes all, small and great, both rich and poor, both free and bond, that they may give them a mark on their right hand, or on their forehead:"
(The Godbey New Testament, emp. add.)
The Godbey New Testament is a translation of the New Testament by William Baxter Godbey (1833–1920), an American Methodist minister and theologian. He spent 20 years reading through the Tichendorf Greek New Testament before making his own translation. In spite of the fact of getting a great deal of the words more true to the original Greek than most translations, it still left a great many things out, and the "Holy King James Authorized Version" was still the only acceptable text of the day. The Godbey New Testament faded into obscurity, and became all but forgotten.
