Ezekiel 16:52
Footnote:
Eze. 16:52 | The verb פלל derives from the basic sense “to cleave, divide, separate” (Fürst, Hebräisches und Chaldäisches Wörterbuch). From this root develops the idea “to judge, decide between parties”, hence in Hithpael and Piel: “to separate oneself, mediate, pray”, and further “to think, estimate.” The root corresponds to Arabic فلّ (falla, “to break asunder”) and Sanskrit phal (“to divide, distinguish”), while Syriac ܦܠܠ (palal) shifted semantically to “to mix, roll about, soil.” From the root derive forms such as פלל, פללה, and תפלה (“prayer, intercession, judgment”). Thus in Ezek 16:52 (פללת לאחותך) the qal perfect 2fs denotes “you separated to your sister.” |
