Strong’s #2845, חת Cheth. From chathath; dismay, terror, prostrate. See also the noun חַת chath, #2844, crushed, dismayed, dread, afraid. “the fear and terror [chath] of you is upon the whole…” Genesis 9:2.

1. Literal sense

  • “To shatter, prostrate, break down” — physical action, applied to objects, nations, or even the ground.

  • Example: a wall or a bow being shattered.

2. Figurative / inward sense

  • “To be dismayed, terrified, confounded, humbled” — internal, psychological, or emotional state.

  • Example: a person or people experiencing fear, terror, or moral subjugation.

  • This is the sense most commentators associate with חתי / חתית (Hittite): the Hittites are seen as ones who are “dismayed / terrified” — emphasizing impact on the mind or spirit rather than physical shattering.
