RBT Paraphrase:
The Sons: Pleasant Plantings
Do not gaze at myself, myself who is blackened-blackened3 the Sun she who has caught sight of myself, The sons of the mother of myself were burned glowing hot within myself, they placed myself, she who takes care of the self eternal Vineyards The vineyard of myself, who is my own, I have not taken care of!
Julia Smith Literal 1876 Translation:
Thou shalt not see me, I am black; the sun searched me: my mother's sons were angry with me; they set me to watch the vineyards; my vineyard I watched not for me.
LITV Translation:
Do not look at me, that I am black, that the sun has looked on me. My mother's sons were angry with me; they made me the keeper of the vineyards; but my own vineyard I have not kept.
Brenton Septuagint Translation:
Look not upon me, because I am dark, Because the sun has looked unfavorably upon me: My mother’s sons strove with me; They made me keeper in the vineyards; I have not kept my own vineyard.

Sng. 1:6
Sng. 1:6

שחרחרת (shekharḥoret) black-black. This word exhibits doubling of the root שחר (which means "to be black" or "dark"). This is called reduplication and is said to add intensity.

  • אדמודם (admodam) – red-red (from אדם, red).
  • ירוקרוק (yerokrok) – green-green (from ירוק, green).
  • חורחר (ḥavarḥar) – white-white (from חור, white/pale).
