Strongs #G2998 λᾱτομέω active form means "to quarry" and is used in various contexts:

  1. Quarrying earth: Found in Poseidon 57 J.
  2. Quarrying rock: Referenced in IG 42(1).122.25 (Epid.), Diodorus Siculus 5.39.
  3. Quarrying stones: Mentioned in PCair.Zen. 499.38 (3rd century B.C.), Antigonus Mir. 161.
  4. Used absolutely (without direct object): Seen in PCair.Zen. 296.34 (3rd century B.C.), Agatharchides 25, Josephus AJ 8.2.9.
  5. Passive form: "λελατόμηται" found in PPetr. 2p.12 (3rd century B.C.); and in the phrase "τὰ -ούμενα θραύματα" (quarried fragments) in Diodorus Siculus 3.12.

Additionally, the term is used to mean "hew out a pit" as seen in the LXX (Septuagint) in Exodus 21.33 and Deuteronomy 6.11 (in passive form).
