The term ἐμπόριον (plural ἐμπόρια) is not limited to local marketplaces; it frequently denotes strategic trading stations, coastal ports, or centralized commercial hubs facilitating both domestic and international commerce. Herodotus (1.165, 2.178) and Thucydides (1.13, 1.100) describe ἐμπόρια established in regions without full civic structures, while Strabo (Geography) and Appian (Mithridatic Wars) attest to its use for shared ports accommodating merchants from multiple regions. In Athens, ὁ ἐ. functioned as a central exchange where local and foreign merchants converged (Diph. 17.3; Demosthenes, Speeches), emphasizing its role as a regulatory and commercial focal point rather than simply a casual market. The term thus spans local marts, urban commercial quarters, and international emporia, underlining its versatility in classical and Hellenistic economic geography.
(cf. LSJ ἐμπόριον)
"Wisdom has built the House of herself. She has cut-out pillars of herself: seven." (Proverbs 9:1 RBT)
The ways of Sheol —the house of herself is of those who climb down toward the chambers of death. (Proverbs 7:27 RBT)
And he said to those selling doves, Take away these things hence; make not the house of my Father a house of merchandise.
And to the ones selling the doves, He said, Take these things from here! Do not make My Father's house a house of merchandise.
