Job. 36:24
Job. 36:24

The form שררו (šārǝrû) derives from the root שרר (śārar), meaning “to rule” or “to exercise authority,” not from שׁיר (שִׁיר, šîr), “to sing.” Although the two roots may appear similar in unpointed Hebrew script (e.g., שררו), they are etymologically and morphologically distinct. The verb שררו is Qal perfect 3rd masculine plural, meaning “they ruled” or “they acted as princes,” and is related to nouns such as שר (“prince”) and שררה (“dominion”). In contrast, the verb “they sang” would appear as שרו (šāru) from the root שיר.
