Can't force an accusative sense onto what is dative. The verb προσεύχομαι (“to pray”) typically takes the dative rather than the accusative (praying to who), indicating the means or medium rather than a direct object. Hence, προσηύξατο προσευχῇ is best rendered “he prayed by/in a prayer,” not “he prayed a prayer,” which would require the accusative προσευχήν. |
