I. Philosophical sense Faculty of judgment (the internal power to discern). Plutarch, Moralia 448b: used for the human faculty that evaluates or makes distinctions. Standard of truth (criterion, test). Plato, Theaetetus 178b: refers to a criterion for discerning true vs. false. Later philosophers (esp. Stoics, Epicureans, Skeptics) debated the κριτήριον τῆς ἀληθείας = criterion of truth.
