θυσία - burnt offering, mode of sacrifice, festival of sacrifices, rite, ceremony
μοσχοποιέω - NT Coined hapax: tender shoot making
μόσχος (móskhos) has a dual meaning, and its primary, older meaning is actually related to plant life.
A tender, juicy shoot; a sprout, of a plant or tree. This is the original meaning, likely derived from a Proto-Indo-European root that referred to "a young shoot" or "the young of an animal."
The meaning of "calf" or "young bull" developed from the first, as a "calf" is a young, tender, and growing animal, much like a plant shoot.
While the "calf" meaning is more common for μόσχος, in this compound construct μοσχοποιέω "calf-making" as a verb makes far less sense than the root meaning of "tender shoot fabricating."
And they made a calf in those days, and brought up a sacrifice to the image, and rejoiced in the works of their hands.
And they made a calf in those days, and led a sacrifice up to the idol, and made merry in the works of their hands.
