And having passed by the first and second watch, they came to the iron gate leading to the city; which of its free will was opened to them: and having come out, they advanced one street; and quickly the messenger departed from him.
And going through a first and a second guard, they came on the iron gate leading into the city, which opened to them of itself. And going out, they went on one street; and instantly the angel withdrew from him.
Footnotes
| 56 | Acts 12:10 ῥύμη rush, swing, force. This can denote the whirling momentum of a potter’s wheel. In Antiphon 52.2, τροχοῦ ῥύμαισι refers to the rotational rush / driving swing of the wheel, i.e. the kinetic force produced by its motion, by which the vessel (κύτος) is shaped. The sense is not “street” here but forceful circular motion, whirl, momentum. Semantic range relevant to this context: core sense: forceful movement, rush, swing applied to rotation: whirl, rotational momentum hence: the shaping power of the spinning wheel Thus, for a potter’s wheel, ῥύμη = the driving rotational force / whirl by which the clay is formed. The sense “street, lane” for ῥύμη is secondary and figurative.
