Footnotes

1Ki. 18:4
1Ki. 18:4

The Hebrew verb ื›ืœื›ืœ (Piel form) is a reduplicated form of the root ื›ื•ืœ (K-W-L), which primarily means "to contain, hold together, or sustain." The doubling is because of the two-sided nature of "holding in" or "sustaining." The letter ื› symbolizes the palm of a hand. ืœ symbolizes a staff, and together ื›ืœ means "the whole."

The Piel form intensifies this meaning, taking on the sense of "to receive, to hold, to sustain, to nourish, or to support." This reduplication follows a common pattern in the Piel stem, reinforcing the idea of embracing, enclosing, or providing for something or someone. Biblical occurrences include 1 Kings 18:4, where Obadiah "sustained" the prophets with food and water, and Genesis 45:11, where Joseph provides for his family. The meaning of "to measure" is a secondary development from the core idea of containment.
